What is LASIK?

LASIK is a surgical procedure performed on the cornea that is intended to improve vision by decreasing a person’s dependence of contact lenses and glasses.  LASIK stands for “Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis” which briefly refers to the surgical procedure using a tool such as a microkeratome to cut through the upper layers of the cornea, creating a flap to expose the middle layer, and using a special laser to reshape the underlying cornea to allow the retina to better focus light and eliminate refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.  The upper layers of the cornea are then carefully put back in place, and will continue their use as a protective flap.

Among the many eye care providers in the greater Texas area, Dr. Taylor R. Brooks and the specialized staff at Brooks Eye Center are educated and current with LASIK surgery procedures, and are also experts on the non-surgical LASIK alternative called Ortho-K that allows comparatively favorable results for patients while sleeping.  For more information on the LASIK surgery or the Ortho-K non-surgical procedures, please contact a member of the Brooks Eye Center staff.
