Risks & Complications with LASIK
Risks of LASIK Surgery
Most patients are very pleased with the results of the LASIK surgery procedure, however just like many other medical procedures there are potential risks involved. That’s why Brooks Eye Center encourages their patients to know the limitations and possible complications of the LASIK refractive surgery procedure.
Every potential candidate should carefully weigh the risks and benefits of LASIK personally, and avoid being influenced by friends and family members that have the procedure, or doctors that encourage the treatment.Risk
- As a result of the treatment, some patients may lose some of their vision, and it cannot be corrected with glasses, contacts, or additional surgeries.
- Some patients may develop one or more debilitating visual symptoms creating results worse than before the procedure
- There is a possibility of being under-treated or over-treated, and because of that there is a chance that glasses or contact lenses may still be needed after the procedure.
- There is a chance that some patients may develop severe eye syndrome causing discomfort and not producing enough tears to keep the eye moist.
- Candidates with refractive errors generally don’t have as good of results, and still may need contact lenses or glasses. Expectations from the procedure should be determined before the surgery.
- Patients with farsightedness may see diminishing results with aging.
- Due that the LASIK procedure is still relatively new, there is not a lot of long-term data available.
